While Sen. Merkley and Reps. Bonamici and Hoyle have taken action to block weapons to Israel, Sen. Wyden and Oregon’s other representatives remain complicit in genocide.

On July 30, over half of Senate Democrats voted to stop sending bombs to Israel. Sen. Wyden broke with the majority — and the will of the people.

Portland Jews & allies say this is UNCONSCIONABLE. Now is the time to tell Wyden: Do your job. Stand with us and stop the bombs.

SUNDAY 9/7: The Global Sumud Flotilla is on its way! On 9/7 it will be approaching Gaza, and it’s crucial that the world is watching. We’re bringing awareness to the mission by dedicating 9/7 as a day or action!

Join us on Sunday afternoon for a bike ride, rally, march and special livestream with flotilla crew members. Bring your friends; let’s make this BIG.

BIKE RIDE: decorate your bike like a boat, fly a Palestine flag, and meet us at Laurelhurst Park at 2pm for a 2:30 ride. We’ll make our way to Salmon Street Springs, where bikes will be invited to help cork the march.

RALLY & MARCH: Meet at Salmon Street Springs at 3pm for a 3:30 march. Dragon boat races will be happening at this time and there will be lots of people out to see and hear us. We will start with speakers and music, then go on a .6 mile march (all paved, not a loop) to a venue where we’ll watch a livestream. There will be bathrooms, water, and snacks available at the venue.

LIVESTREAM AND OTHER ACTIVITIES: at 4pm we’ll arrive at the venue for a livestream with flotilla crew members.This is a unique opportunity to talk directly with people aboard the flotilla boats, and may be the last opportunity to speak with them before they arrive in Gaza (or are intercepted). The livestream will be followed by other craft activities and performances. Venue details to be released later this week.

🚨On August 25th, israel struck Nasser Hospital Complex 3 times, intentionally sending the second and third strike after the first one had brought in emergency personnel, medical workers and journalists to cover the attack. The strikes appeared on live television as the first attack was being reported on; at least 22 people were murdered, mostly from these second and third strikes.

‼️Once again, israel had committed more war crimes; intentionally attacking hospitals, press workers, medical staff and first responders. All while starving nearly 2 million people and operating “aid” sites where over 2,000 people have been killed, mostly by IOF sniper fire.

✊🏼We must continue to stand against these atrocities and demand an end of all U.S. aid to israel, without which the genocide would not be able to continue.

We stand together. United. Peaceful and Determined. Oregonians from all walks of life—nurses, teachers, faith leaders, small business owners, labor unions, families, and community members—are coming together in a peaceful demonstration to send a clear message: NO MILITARY TAKEOVER OF PORTLAND.

Trump’s threat to deploy military troops into Oregon is unwanted, unlawful, and a direct threat to communities across the state. People from across Oregon and across the political spectrum are joining together to speak out in defense of their homes, their rights, and their freedoms.

This is an abuse of power and a misuse of the military. Portland is home—not a military target. Violence has no place in our politics or our communities. The military should not come to Oregon.

We are calling for an America where people are safe in their neighborhoods, are free to speak their minds, and can live without fear of government retaliation

At least 65,000 innocent Palestinians in Gaza have died since October 2023 because of Israeli genocide, and thousands more have been injured or are missing under the rubble. Most of those deaths were of women and children. Today, in addition to ongoing military attacks in Gaza that kill hundreds more, Israel is preventing food and water from entering Gaza, which is leading to death by starvation. 

WE MUST MOBILIZE TO STOP THE GENOCIDE!

On August 31, a number of boats carrying unarmed, volunteer humanitarian sailors and tons of foodstuffs for Gaza left Barcelona for Gaza. Two Portlanders – Stephen Wahab and Paul Reid – are on the boats, both as crew members. Steve’s boat was bombed by an Israeli drone that dropped an incendiary device on it while in port in Tunisia, and Paul just switched boats in response to new Israeli threats of increased violence.

Each of the volunteer sailors has pledged in writing to refuse and oppose any form of violence during their effort to break the siege of Gaza. The first wave of boats started in Barcelona and picked up more boats in Tunisia, Italy (Sicily), and Greece. Altogether, today there are over 40 boats representing 44 countries heading toward Gaza; at this writing, they are about 500 nautical miles away. But Israel is insisting that the flotilla will not reach Gaza, and has used drones to drop flash grenades, incendiary devices, and toxic chemicals on the boats so far.

Yesterday we received credible intelligence from European countries stating that Israel has decided to increase its level of violence against the sailors and their boats. In the face of these threats, WE MUST MOBILIZE TO SUPPORT THE FLOTILLA!

The recent decision by 159 countries including the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Australia, to recognize the State of Palestine marks a historic moment in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Coming amid the ongoing war in Gaza, Jewish settlement expansion in the Occupied West Bank, and mounting Palestinian civilian suffering, recognition is being cited by European and other leaders as necessary for reviving the moribund “two-state solution.”

Welcomed by Palestinians and supported by influential regional actors such as Saudi Arabia and the Arab League, the move has provoked fierce opposition from Israel and a sharp rebuke from the United States. This raises urgent questions: Will growing European and international recognition shift realities on the ground, or is it purely symbolic? Given U.S. opposition, what role—if any—can Arab, Islamic and European countries play in shaping prospective Palestinian statehood? And how might Palestinian lives be affected in the short and medium term?

To examine these questions, the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center will host a panel discussion on Monday, September 29, at 4:00 PM EEST (UTC+3). The panel will consist of Yezid Sayigh, senior fellow at the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center; Rym Momtaz, editor-in-chief of Carnegie Europe’s blog Strategic Europe; Hasan Alhasan, senior fellow for Middle East Policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies; and Zaha Hassan, human rights lawyer and senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The event will be in English and moderated by Maha Yahya, director of the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center.

On Yom Kippur, we’re called to collective atonement. In Judaism, none of us are forgiven until all of us take responsibility – especially those in power.

Wyden often invokes his Judaism to inform his fight for justice – yet he remains complicit in genocide, continuing to back U.S. weapons shipments to Israel. He says he doesn’t want to see history repeat itself. Neither do we.

True teshuva means taking responsibility. Not just personally, but collectively. We call on Senator Wyden, the rest of the federal delegation, and all of us to atone for our complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Jews and allies: join us in collective grieving and ritual, and demand justice.
We’ll mark this holy day with ritual, reflection, and resistance. We will continue to call out our government to Stop Arming Israel and End the Genocide in Gaza.

Produced by Donkeysaddle Projects, +972 Magazine, and The Nation in partnership with Just Vision, Severed (2025) follows the story of Mohamad Saleh, a teenager from Gaza who lost his leg at 12 and survived five Israeli military assaults. In those attacks, he lost his home, close family members, and best friends. His story is not only one of personal loss, but a reflection of the thousands of Palestinians disabled by Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

Following the screening, there will be a live panel discussion with Severed protagonist and co-producer, Mohammad Salah, Executive Director of New Disabled South, Dom Kelly, Executive Director of Adalah Justice Project, Sandra Tamari, and Founding Executive Director of Crushing Colonialism,’ Jen Deerinwater.

LC DIVESTS!

1.5 years ago LC raised its first encampment for Palestine and formed SJPPH.

This week, THE LC BOARD OF TRUSTEES VOTED TO DIVEST FROM WEAPONS MANUFACTURING AND TO DISCLOSE ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS.

This action is a direct result from LC’s second encampment in the Fall of 2024 where we worked to build our community and organizing efforts on campus and negotiated our demands of divestment, disclosure, and recognition of Israel’s genocide in Palestine with the LC administration.
This is an extraordinary feat that the LC community has worked consistently to obtain. It is because of our protests, our pressures, our community supports, that we were able to accomplish this.

Currently, Israel continues its genocidal campaign (despite the ceasefire agreement) and devastating apartheid regime. SJPPH celebrates this enormous win but we will continue our fight. It is still up to us to hold LC accountable to its commitments.

While the fight continues, LC should be proud of the step we have taken today.

The Gaza Strip has one of the highest rates of traumatic amputations in the world. Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli bullets and bombs have resulted in more than 4,800 limb amputations; during the first two years following October 7, an estimated 10 children per day lost one or both legs. Palestinians in the West Bank also are experiencing an elevated rate of amputation due to the violence of the occupation there, including handcuff injuries for detainees.

The panel discussion will focus on the causes of the appallingly high rate of amputations, including from deliberate IDF policies to target limbs, and on the long-term physical and mental health prognoses for people living with amputation. Importantly, panelists will also address what activists can do to reduce the root causes of amputations, support recovery, and redress the injustice.

Jonathan Kuttab is a co-founder of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq and co-founder of Nonviolence International. A well-known international human rights attorney, Jonathan practices in the US, Palestine and Israel. He serves on the Board of Bethlehem Bible
College and is President of the Board of Holy Land rust. Jonathan was the head of the Legal Committee negotiating the Cairo Agreement of 1994 between Israel and the PLO. After graduating with his Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from Virginia Law School, and practicing a couple years on Wall Street, Jonathan returned home to Palestine. Jonathan was visiting
scholar at Osgoode Law School at York University in Toronto in the Fall of 2017, and is a founding director of Just Peace Advocates Movement pour une Paix Juste, a Canadian based international law human rights not-for-profit organization. Jonathan is currently the executive director of Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA).

Portland City Council is meeting on 11/19 and will be voting on investment policy for the next year.

O4HR is working to get an amendment introduced to implement a human rights screen on all investments (that will get our money out of genocide, immigration control, environmental damage, etc!)

KBOO Community Radio will air a special episode of Radiozine featuring the recent PSU Panel on Free Speech and Education, recorded at Portland State University. The broadcast will take place Thursday, November 20 at 10:00 a.m.

This important conversation examines the ongoing decline of academic free speech in U.S. education. Panelists discuss their own experiences within institutions where political, legal, and financial pressures have increasingly limited open dialogue. Topics include the erosion of academic freedom, the rise of anticipatory obedience in institutional speech policies, and the impact of silencing on educators, students, and democratic culture.

Portland – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden today announced he will hold an open-to-all town hall Sunday, November 23 in Lincoln County.

Heading into this 1:30 pm town hall at the Newport High School gym (322 NE Eads St., Newport), Wyden has held 1,137 open-to-all town halls in keeping his promise to hold at least one town hall each year in each of Oregon’s 36 counties.

“The Oregon Way is all about showing up in our state’s communities, listening to everybody’s opinions and answering their questions,” Wyden said. “The Trump administration’s unilateral decisions to move a Coast Guard helicopter out of Newport — putting fishermen’s lives at risk, and to explore the placement of an immigration detention facility in town has generated serious and justifiable local concerns in Lincoln County.”

“I want to hear from Oregonians so I can keep battling to convey this coastal community’s views accurately and forcefully to Washington, DC,” Wyden said. “I expect the topics of the Coast Guard helicopter and an immigration detention facility will be front-and-center but like all my open-to-all town halls, no topic is off limits.”

For everyone’s security, backpacks and large bags will not be allowed in the town hall.

U.S. politicians must reject AIPAC funding and represent their constituents, not Israeli interests. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Israel’s primary lobbying group, poses a threat to free speech, undermines workers’ economic interests, advocates for perpetual wars and genocide, and obstructs international diplomacy. These actions come at the expense of the American people and often go against their will.

As the U.S.-based Palestine solidarity movement, it is our duty to isolate the racist ideology of Zionism and ensure it never regains its image. We must also advance the call for an arms embargo by exposing and isolating the lobby responsible for advocating for continued weapons shipments to Israel.

Come be in community and watch the film screening of Gaza Fights for Freedom, a documentary by Abby Martin.

In recognition of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Oregonian director Abby Martin, who was banned from entering Gaza, worked remotely with a team located within the besieged area to secure raw footage of the Great March of Return, a peaceful protest in 2018 that resulted in hundreds of Palestinian casualties and injuries within mere hours. This documentary delves into Gaza’s history—frequently overlooked by mainstream media.

Gaza Fights for Freedom, a 74-minute documentary, narrates the story of Gaza’s past and present (as 2018), featuring rare archival footage and infographics that clarify a complex history and the current siege (as 2018), infographics, and first-hand testimonies from victims of the ongoing massacre, including journalists, medics, and the family of the renowned paramedic and humanitarian conducted on the ground to provide essential context on the colonial Zionist occupation of Palestine and the Palestinian resistance in response to it.

Tickets are $12 and are available at the door and at No Other Land tickets. Proceeds will be donated to the AFSC Gaza Relief Fund.

For five years, Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist, filmed his West Bank community, Masafer Yatta, as it was being dismantled by Israeli soldiers. Along the way, he formed an alliance with Israeli journalist, Yuval Abraham. Together, they created a powerful documentary which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2024. Despite winning an Oscar, the film could not find a U.S. distributor after being picked up for distribution in 24 other countries. Please invite your friends and help us publicize this event through any contacts you have.

There are people who do not want you to see this film. Only local screenings like this make the film available. In February 2025, Basel Adra was attacked and beaten by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. On 24 March 2025, co-director Hamdan Ballal was attacked by Israeli settlers at his home in Susiya in the West Bank and left with head injuries. On 28 July 2025, Awdah Hathaleen (also known as Odeh Hadalin), a consultant on the film, was fatally shot by Yinon Levi, an Israeli settler.
