Unusually quick operation against "illegal outpost" builders |
|
Written by ISM Press release

Saturday, 08 December 2007 |
Three Palestinians, five Israelis, and three international (Swedish)
activists were forcibly evicted from a Palestinian house and arrested
today in the E-1 area. Early this morning Palestinians built a house
in the controversial E-1 area. Palestinians are routinely denied
permits to build on their own land, and homes that have been built are
demolished. The Human Rights activists stayed inside for a few hours
before a large police and army presence evicted them through use of
force.
The E-1, or East-1 area, is between Ma`ale Adumim and Jerusalem, on
lands from nearby Palestinian villages. The Israeli government plans
to build a settlement of 3,500 apartments and an industrial park in
this area. This will effectively connect the Ma`ale Adumim settlement
with Occupied East Jerusalem, dividing the West Bank in two while
separating Jerusalem from all of it. In addition land has recently
been confiscated to build a road to connect the two Palestinian
enclaves that will be created on both sides of the `settlement bloc`.

Young Israelis Resist Challenges to Settlements |

SHVUT AMI OUTPOST, West Bank — For two months, Jewish youths have been
renovating an old stone house on this muddy hilltop in the northern
West Bank. The house is not theirs, however. It belongs to a
Palestinian family. And their seizure of it, along with the land around
it, for a new settlement outpost is a violation of Israeli law. The
police have evicted the group five times, but they keep coming back. |

US criticises Israeli homes plan |
|
Written by BBC News

Friday, 07 December 2007 |
The United States has voiced rare criticism of Israel, for its decision to build more homes on occupied land.
"This doesn't help build confidence," Secretary of State Condoleezza
Rice said after meeting Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni in
Brussels.
Israel said on Tuesday it had invited bids to build 300 new homes in
Har Homa, a settlement in East Jerusalem. The Palestinians asked the US
for help. |

Israel to build in East Jerusalem |
|
Written by Rory McCarthy in Jerusalem, The Guardian
|
|
Tuesday, 04 December 2007 |
Israel's housing ministry said yesterday it plans to build 307 new
homes in a settlement in East Jerusalem, drawing swift condemnation
from Palestinian officials.
Tenders were published for housing units in Har Homa, a settlement to
the south-east of the city on land captured by Israel in the 1967 war
and later annexed. East Jerusalem is now home to around 200,000 Jewish
settlers. Most of the international community does not recognise
Israel's annexation of the east of the city.
The announcement comes days after the peace conference at Annapolis in
the US intended to restart long-stalled negotiations on an agreement to
end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
Palestinian officials said yesterday the tenders were in breach of the
US road map for peace, which leaders from both sides agreed at
Annapolis would again be the basis of talks. |

Israel 'lax on demolition orders' |
|
Written by BBC News

|
Israel has carried out only 3% of its own demolition orders in Jewish
settlements in the West Bank, Israeli anti-settlement campaigners say.
The decision to construct now is a provocation -Yariv Oppenheimer, Peace Now
In the past 10 years, nearly 3,500 demolition orders were issued but
just over 100 were observed, the Peace Now group says, citing
government figures.
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat has asked the US to block Israeli plans for 300 new homes in east Jerusalem. |
