O little town of Bethlehem |

O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie.
Except for tanks and M 16s and soldiers glaring eye.
And in thy rough streets shouting,
" the curfew's on it's clear".
The hopes and fears of many cry,
"Please don't forget we're here".

Meanwhile, in the West Bank |

Don't let the quiet fool you: It is imaginary. While all eyes are on Gaza, the impression has been created, under the aegis of a media turning a blind eye, that the West Bank is quiet. That's where the "good guys" are in charge, those with whom we went to Annapolis, those who will be getting the money from the donor nations, and life there is great, so it seems.
Well, that is not the case. The lives of the Palestinians in the West Bank are also intolerable, blood is being shed there too. For the Israel Defense Forces it is business as usual, with a frighteningly quick finger on the trigger. The spirit of Annapolis and the lofty words of the prime minister do not prevail there.
I have visited quite a few mourners' homes in the West Bank in recent months. They were all mourning family members who had been killed for no reason. Every week, innocent people are killed in the West Bank, and nobody talks about them. Among the dozens of Palestinians killed recently, not all were Qassam launchers or gang leaders from Gaza. If a new uprising erupts in the West Bank one day, it will originate in these mourners' homes.
The daily routine in the West Bank is also patently inhumane. The night I spent last summer in the Jenin refugee camp brought that home to me: The IDF enters the camp every night, and even when it does not kill, it strikes great terror in the hearts of thousands of families, who are the victims of anxiety. There are few Israelis who can imagine the daily routine of West Bank residents, during the day and even more so at night. And we have not said a word about the poverty, the roadblocks and the home demolitions.

From his home on the Upper Galilee road between Safed and Rosh Pina, as
Brigadier General (res.) Zvika Fogel looks out over Lake Kinneret, the
Gaza Strip seems a distant memory. But four years after Fogel retired
from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Gaza continues to preoccupy him.
He became chief of staff of Southern Command headquarters in February
2000, and in the past few years he has reflected a great deal on the
actions he and his fellow officers carried out in the months that
preceded the eruption of the second intifada, at the end of September
2000. His conclusion: the IDF created an irreversible situation that
led to a confrontation with the Palestinians.
The conceptual sequence is that we are creating the conditions for a
confrontation by the very fact of our preparations," Fogel says. "It is
clear to everyone that this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. We want to
decide which event would foment the explosion. All we have to do is say
what will launch it and then behave as we have planned."
"The constellation of preparations we made actually led to the
confrontation - there was no other choice," says Fogel, who is still
called up for reserve service in Southern Command. At the end of 2004,
a year after he left the IDF, Fogel ran unsuccessfully for mayor of
Be'er Sheva. Currently he manages a process analysis and project
management company, and is starting work on his doctoral dissertation,
which will deal with leadership and decision-making. |

Israel confirms settlement plans |

Israel plans to build 740 new homes in settlements in occupied East
Jerusalem, a minister said, despite its commitment to freeze all
settlement activity.
Rafi Eitan, minister for Jerusalem affairs, said Israel had never
promised to stop building within Jerusalem and had a duty to house its
citizens.
It is budgeting to build 500 new homes in Har Homa and 240 in Maaleh Adumim.
A Palestinian spokesman condemned the plans, accusing Israel of seeking to destroy renewed peace talks.
Every day we hear a new settlement expansion plan - this
cannot be tolerated - Saeb Erekat, Palestinian negotiator
The two sides agreed at a peace conference in Annapolis in the US in
late November to revive the 2003 peace plan known as the roadmap.
According to the plan, Israel must halt all settlement activity and the Palestinians must rein in militants.
But soon after the conference, Israel announced a tender for 300 homes in Har Homa.

Bethlehem is one of the most contentious places on earth. Perchedat the edge of the Judaen desert at the intersection of Europe, Asiaand Africa in the state of Palestine it was governed by the Britishfollowing the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. After World War II theUnited Nations voted to partition the region into two states - oneJewish, one Arab and there’s been fighting ever since. It’sobviously not the job of a loose collection of idiot doodlers to tellyou what’s right or wrong about this situation, so you’re advised to dofurther reading yourself (this month’s National Geographic has anexcellent article all about Bethlehem). We would liketo make it very clear Santa’s Ghetto is not allied to ANY race, creed, religion, political organization or lobby group. As an organisation theonly thing we’ll say on behalf of our artists is that we don’t speak onbehalf of our artists. This show simply offers the ink-stained hand offriendship to ordinary people in an extraordinary situation. Everyshekel made in the store will be used on local projects for childrenand young people. Not one cent will go to any political groups, governmental institutions or, in fact, any grown-ups at all. Salaam. |
