ACTION: Stand up for divestment in San Diego |
|
Written by Jewish Voice for Peace

|
Tuesday, 27 April 2010 |
Tomorrow, April 28, students at UC San Diego will be considering
for the first time a bill to divest from occupation. The San Diego
bill--very similar to the one that will be discussed by UC Berkeley that
very same night--calls for divestment from General Electric and United
Technologies, as well as divestment from any other company that a)
provides military support for/or weaponry to support the occupation of
the Palestinian territories or b) facilitates the building or
maintenance of the illegal wall or the demolition of Palestinian homes,
or c) facilitates the building, maintenance, or economic development of
illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian territories.
The San Diego students need your help right now, since the
backlash against the bill has already started. Please write an email to
the student senators. Ask them to support the bill.

Protest: Stop funding Israeli Apartheid! End support for AIPAC! |

"A lobby is like a night flower: It thrives in the dark and dies in the sun." SteveRosen, the former AIPAC foreign policy chief "Even in these partisan times, support for AIPAC is an article of faith for both political parties. This is as it should be . . ."OregonGovernor Ted Kulongoski The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is one of the most powerful lobbies in the United States. AIPAC has huge influence in shaping U.S. Foreign policy in the Middle East. AIPAC's lobbying helps instill an aggressive, militaristic foreign policy with ourlocal, state, and federal politicians. The policies being promoted by AIPAC today will often be repeated by our politicians in thecoming year. AIPAC often drafts the congressional letters and bills supporting hardline policies which support Israel's ongoing human rights violations. AIPAC opposes holding Israel accountable to international law and opposes Obama's call for a freeze on Israel's illegal settlements.Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights www.auphr.orgSee our web site for our calendar of events and AUPHR meetings. |

we actually cultivated a kind of carnivorous plant that is slowly devouring us |

I think that we are all beginning to grasp — even those who maybe don’t
really want to — how 43 years ago, by turning a blind eye, by actively
or passively cooperating, we actually cultivated a kind of
carnivorous plant that is slowly devouring us, consuming every good part
within us, making the country we live in a place that is not good to
live in. Not good not only if you are an Arab citizen of
Israel, and certainly if you are a Palestinian resident of the
Territories — not good also for every Jewish Israeli person who wants to
live here, who cherishes some hope to be in a place where humans are
respected as humans, where your rights are treated as a given, where
humanity, morality, and civil rights are not dirty words, not something
from the bleeding-heart Left. No. These are the bread and water, the
butter and milk of our lives, the stuff from which we will make our
lives, and really make them lives worth living here. |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Israeli settlers attack Portland-church volunteer with stones in Jerusalem |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 9, 2010
Israeli settlers attack Portland-church volunteer with stones in Jerusalem
(Portland, Ore. April 9, 2010) -- Hardline Israeli settler youths assaulted three female Ecumenical Accompaniers (EAs), including Kathy Preuss of Tigard, in Jerusalem on Monday, hurling rocks and bottles in an unprovoked attack.
Eight "adolescent Jewish settler boys congregated together and started yelling obscenities at us, 'Go back to German,' 'Go back to Jordan,' and 'This is Jewish,' says Preuss, a volunteer with the Ecumenical Accompaniement Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), an initiative of the World Council of Churches. EAs provide a nonviolent, "protective presence to vulnerable communities, monitor and report human rights abuses and support Palestinians and Israelis working together for peace," according to the program's website eappi.org.
"One young boy.. was fast approaching my colleague," relays Preuss. "Her back was to him as she was trying to walk away. With a clenched fist and arm raised over his head, I believed he was going to hit her. I yelled, 'No', and as she turned to face him, he quickly turned away. Rocks were now being thrown at us, and one of my teammates was hit in the arm." The rock was fist size and struck an EA who is in her sixties, bruising her arm.
Preuss felt surrounded. Then a "group of Sheikh Jarrah Palestinian residents positioned themselves between us and the settlers. The scene soon intensified. A large group of settler boys were on one side and the Palestinians on the other. Rocks and sticks were being thrown. These rocks were fist size and larger. It was chaotic. That confrontation ended with the settler boys running from the scene."
